Art is a funny thing. / by Keith Saarloos

"Art" is a funny thing, it is so passionately internal, personal, individual. Yet, it is meant to be shared, exposed, set naked on a pedestal to be viewed, judged, envied & deemed worthy. By those with means, taste, and hopefully appreciation.
...
It is being hopelessly in love, when you are 16, overwhelmingly exciting and paralyzingly confusing. A sea of emotion sloshing back and forth in your skin. Is it a wonder why so many are prescribed both by doctor and by self to ballast the raging seas confined within.
...
Art is the dreams where we understand can fly, but have no idea how. we fight midnight cramps and grinded teeth to hover only inches in our sleep. To throw punches that never land.
...
All to create the things we lust after. To pull our dreams from our souls with fishhooks and wire.
...
Art is the adventurer who has traveled a lifetime to bring Ice and spice to be laid upon the table to be viewed and judged and purchased by those who wish to sprinkle it upon their drinks to be consumed and forgotten, and poured down the drain. When the mood has changed.
...
Life and limb for pennies and dimes, in order to finance the next adventure.
...
Yet,
...
Here is the secret, you painters, you poets, you farmers, you blacksmiths, you builders, you sportsmen, you dancers, you cowboys, you chefs, you winemakers, you singers, you surfers, you punks, you writers, you designers, you craftsmen,
YOU,
who has written far further than the ink has been paid for.
...
Your lives are the art,
Living it out completely,
is the payment.
...
And those that have the means to afford you, are buying your life pennies and dimes at a time.
From hours and days and years of lives they have allowed,
compromises they have made,
and dreams they have forgotten.
...
You Artists,
They need you to live for them. Do not allow your friends to quit, fight for their passions, start a punk band at 37, do not allow them to compromise. Be naked, be 16 in love, be adventurous, be exposed, release the ballast, become Hemingway, understand you have something worth living for and let it kill you. We are all going there anyway, might as well die for something than live for nothing.
...
Please know, it is they who are the ones that are starving.
They are counting on you to live.
Don't let them down.
...
Art is a funny thing indeed.
