COMMUNION
THE 21-YEAR JOURNEY OF LIQUID JOY
There’s a certain magic in the things that take time, the things that are nurtured, cared for, and allowed to grow at their own pace. Port, by its very nature, is one of those things. It’s a wine that invites you to slow down, to savor every drop, and to experience the richness of time well spent. For us, Communion represents more than just a bottle of wine. It’s 21 years of our family’s story, distilled into something you can pour into a glass and share.
This Port was never meant to be a product – it was an accident, a happy surprise, born from a leftover ton of grapes that we didn’t know what to do with. We weren’t even a winery back then – we were just farmers, growing grapes for other people, selling our harvest to the wineries that had a name, while we quietly stayed behind the scenes.
But that day changed everything. We took a sample of those leftover grapes to a customer, just thinking we could pass them off. Instead, they took a sip and said, “This could make an incredible Port.” And in that moment, the idea of Communion was born.
I remember asking, “Do you know how to make Port?”
They smiled and said, “I’ll show you.”
THE FIRST PORT: A FAMILY LEGACY BEGINS
So, we followed their lead. We fortified the wine, stored it away, and waited. At first, it was just an experiment. But as the years went by, as that wine sat in barrels, quietly aging and becoming something more complex, something more beautiful, we began to understand what we had. This wasn’t just a wine anymore. It was a connection to our past and our future. It was a piece of our story, waiting to be told.
As we grew as a family and as a winery, Communion became the heart of what we were building. My father, who had always loved Port, took to serving it at every family gathering, every holiday, every special occasion. He had these tiny glasses – Communion Glasses – that had belonged to my great-grandmother. They were delicate, like little glass bells. He’d fill each one to the brim, hand them out to everyone in the room, and then raise his own glass high. He’d look around the room, smile that big smile of his, and say, “Lordy, that is TOO GOOD.”
And he was right. It was more than good – it was joy, poured out into every glass.
WHAT COMMUNION MEANS TO US
For my father, Communion wasn’t just a word – it was a way of living. It was the act of gathering, of sharing, of being with the people you love and giving them the best of what you had. Whether it was a holiday dinner or a random Tuesday night, if you were in the room with him, you were part of the moment. You were part of the joy.
He believed in the communion of community, where the simple act of sitting together and sharing a glass of Port was a way of saying, “You matter to me.” He believed in the communion of nature, where just being still and watching the way the light moves through the vineyard or feeling the earth under your feet was a kind of spiritual experience. And he believed in the communion of spirit, where acts of love, of laughter, of ritual, connected us to something bigger than ourselves.
That’s what Communion is about. It’s not just a bottle of wine. It’s the feeling you get when you gather the people you care about, pour them a glass, and share in something meaningful. It’s about raising your glass high, feeling the warmth of the room, and knowing that, for that moment, everything is right.
A 21-YEAR JOURNEY: THE FINAL RELEASE
Now, we’re standing at the end of a 21-year journey. We’re down to the last of our Communion Port – just 20 cases remain. This is the wine that started it all, and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. We’ll be releasing these last bottles slowly over time, making sure that they find their way into the hands of people who understand the significance of what they’re holding.
After two decades in a temperature-controlled vault, kept safe like the treasure it is, this Port is finally ready to be shared. We’ve priced it as low as possible – $50 a bottle – because, at the end of the day, it’s more important to us that this wine is enjoyed than it is to make a profit. We want as many people as possible to have the chance to raise a glass, to be part of this story.
This is more than just wine. This is 21 years of love, of patience, of craftsmanship. This is Communion.
TASTING NOTES: A SIP OF JOY
When you pour a glass of Communion, the first thing you’ll notice is the deep, inky color – a rich, dark red with hints of ruby at the edges. It clings to the glass, swirling slowly, inviting you to take your time.
On the nose, you’re greeted with waves of dark fruit – black cherry, plum, and ripe blackberry – followed by a subtle sweetness of caramelized sugar and dried figs. As you let it breathe, layers of toasted almonds, warm spices, and a touch of dark chocolate begin to emerge, offering a hint of the complexity that’s waiting for you.
When you take that first sip, the experience is nothing short of indulgent. Communion is full-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel that coats your palate. The sweetness is perfectly balanced by the wine’s natural acidity, making it both rich and refreshing. Flavors of blackcurrant, raisin, and candied orange peel dance across your tongue, while hints of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg warm your senses. As it lingers, you’ll notice a faint smokiness, a touch of leather, and a finish that lasts for what feels like forever – long, luxurious, and deeply satisfying.
This is a Port that invites you to slow down. It’s a wine that demands to be savored, to be enjoyed in good company, with plenty of time to appreciate every layer, every nuance. It’s a wine that leaves you smiling, like my father used to, with that deep sigh of contentment that says, “Lordy, that is TOO GOOD.”
A FINAL TOAST: HERE’S TO YOU, DAD
As we release the last of our Communion Port, we raise our glasses to the man who inspired it all. To my father, who understood that life is about more than just getting by. It’s about gathering together, sharing what you have, and making the people around you feel loved, seen, and appreciated.
Here’s to Communion – 21 years in the making.
Here’s to you, for being part of this journey.
And here’s to Dad, for teaching us what really matters.
