Happy Birthday Mom. I love you. by Keith Saarloos

Super Woman.

Super Woman.

That woman, is my mom.

When this photo was taken she was a Star Athlete in 3 sports and a Cheerleader.
She had earned more money in the bank than my father when they bought their first house.
She is the youngest daughter of a fearless tough as nails silent carpenter.
The Youngest of 6.
When my Dad went to pick up my mom on their first date,  Grandpa slammed the door in his face.
She has never missed a thing my brother or I have ever done.
She is Tougher than she seems.
She is more loving than you know.
She is the Hardest working woman you have ever met.
She has beaten Cancer 3 times.
She learned to ride a horse in her late 50's.
She has won more buckles than my dad.
She will beat you at Cards, Horseshoes, and Shooting.
When she says "I can do that" She does, and does it better than the original.
She can paint and draw and fix almost anything.
She Prayed that I would fail somewhere in my life to make sure I was Humble and trusted God more than myself.
She is my children's best friend.
She said we should plant grapes.
She put up with me and my brother.
She will out work you.
She would make us kiss her on the lips when we came home in high school every night to keep us honest.
She knows when you are lying.
She is loyal.
She made my father the man he is today.
She is the glue of my family.
She is the reason me and my brother have a soft side.
She will be embarrassed I wrote this.

Beautiful things don't ask for attention.

Mom never has.

YOU ARE THE FIRST TO KNOW - #CraftWineLA Launches with SAARLOOS + Sons Family Winery + Dig Lounge by Keith Saarloos

Bringing the craft wine-making movement to Los Angeles, CA.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Los Angeles / Los Olivos CA –

SAARLOOS + Sons winery from Los Olivos, CA and food and wine blogger, Matt Mitchell of Dig Lounge announce partnership to bring #CraftWineLA,craft wine movement to Los Angeles, CA.

Many people have no idea that there are just 3 major wine retailers that account for over half of the wine sold in the US. True craft wines are those that you can only buy at a winery or a local wine shop. They tell a story, especially of the people who created them and the land they came from. They aren't made for mass consumption. They are unique, in their flavor and origins.

Everyone has heard of the craft beer movement. Turning our backs on mass-produced beer and opting in for local brew. The craft beer market is stronger than ever. Craft beer makers have mobilized their consumers around a set of shared principles to advocate on their behalf! Not only to drink craft beer, but to ask for it at restaurants, bars and local markets and to pass it on to family and friends.

#CraftWineLA is a crowd funding campaign to bring the craft wine movement to Los Angeles. With the hopes to bring together others in LA who love to drink and/or create craft wines. Our first project is to create a limited edition bottling with SAARLOOS + Sons winery. Future plans to promote craft wine awareness will include wine dinners and events, along with additional wine collaborations with small, independent and family owned wineries.

Those excited for the craft wine movement to come to Los Angeles can donate as little as $20 to be a part of this exciting program.  Donations at the $49 and up level receive at least one bottle of this limited edition wine. Each donation also includes an invite to the first tasting event and pick-up party.

The wine will be crafted by long time food and wine blogger Matt Mitchell from Dig Lounge and SAARLOOS + Sons winery. Together, they will hold a design contest for the label design, allowing local LA artists to submit their designs for this unique wine. For additional information please contact Matt at the email address below.

No donation is too small!

Brielle Hunter Saarloos by Keith Saarloos

I am a pretty proud papa. I get to be Brielle's Dad. We go on walks and talk about stuff every morning. Every day I am absolutely blown away by this Kid. She can hold a conversation, debate issues, and will tell you she disagrees with you, all like a little Mary Poppins. What I am most proud of is that she views Trust as one of the most important elements in our lives. I am incredibly proud of this little girl in the wine and bears her nickname

45 Minutes with Keith Saarloos - By Lifestyle of the Unemployed by Keith Saarloos

I was interviewed by one of my favorite blogs. http://lifestyleoftheunemployed.com/

If you don’t know him, you should. Spend 45 minutes with Keith Saarloos and you’ll learn everything your dad should have taught you. This winemaker/entrepreneur/family man/gentleman sits down to discuss the important things in life.

  1. I’ve been a farmer for 15 years. I’ve been on my knees for six. One day I hope to reach my feet. But growing grapes and making wine was the culmination of everything in my life.

  2. There’s no fraud police. I do it because I say I’m doing it.

  3. You’re idealistic when you graduate. You come out with a handful of matches ready to light the world on fire. After a little while, you look down and realize everyone’s taking turns pissing on them.

  4. If you’re getting paid by someone else, you’re getting paid to achieve their dreams. Not your own.

  5. No one ever asks if their parents are happy but they follow in their footsteps anyway. My job is to live a life that inspires my children. I work hard.

  6. My Great Uncle got off a boat in World War II with people shooting at him from 50 yards away. I’ve never had a bad day in my life.

  7. The best thing you can say is “I did that”. Good or Bad. Own it.

  8. Check out Phil Henry’s "So God made a Farmer". A man needs to be soft enough to cry but tough enough to get back up the next morning.

  9. I don’t know why wine has such a pretense. I grow grapes in the dirt like everyone else. I just happen to also like cheap beer and cheap cigars.

  10. We never remake our wines. We burn our business to the ground every year. That’s how it grows. From the ashes.

  11. Beer is 12 ounces of selfishness. Wine is a shared experience. No one ever talks about that.

  12. I like singer songwriters like Johnny Cash. He sang it because he meant it. Not because he was a great singer. I’m not the best wine maker in the world. I’m a pretty good farmer. I try not to screw it up.

  13. My 8 year old daughter joined an all-boys baseball team. I told her she’s going to have to be twice as good as everyone else. She’s going to be different. Kids are mean. That’s just a fact.

  14. She hit the only home run in the league.

  15. I plant trees so my children and grandchildren can sit under their shade.

  16. What’s next? I don’t know. I want to build something that everyone I love can be a part of. If they can replace me in 10 years, that will be a good day.

  17. Live to honor you those who have come before you. Prepare for those who have yet to come. Honor + Prepare.

A little brotherly love - Happy Birthday Kirk Saarloos by Keith Saarloos

This is the worst picture of my brother I could find.

When You are a Kid:
Having little brother who is great at everything is pretty tough pill to swallow. When your little brother is better than you at the things you are supposed to be good at you get sick of him pretty quick. In all honesty you're jealous, but you don't really know that. You just know you are bigger than him, he bothers you, and you decide to beat him up. But the funny thing about Kirk, is that he never once backed down. He stood up and fought back. We threw each other through Walls, Televisions, Doors, you name it we broke it. We would even have a contest to see how fast we could run across the backyard, most of the time it more than half an hour because we would wrestle the entire time.  We broke everything.

Kirk was and is the kind of person that, if you give him a set of rules, he will learn them, practice incessantly,  master the game, and then destroy you. From baseball, to cards, golf, candyland, horseshoes, darts... anything you can think of. He will teach himself, quietly, and beat you like big blue playing chess against a monkey. Once you compound this, with the fact that he won't turn down a challenge, you get a pretty fierce competitor. Then you mix in the fact that he couldn't care less about winning. Winning is not a big thing to him. In fact he has grown to expect it. I've seen him win some pretty big events in his life, and he seems pretty stoked, but is really more concerned about where we are going to go eat. Most of the time he would be the person over the game area pumping quarters into a hot shot basketball game.

That's Kirk.

But what you may not know.

Is that what Kirk really hates, is to lose. He hates to lose more than he likes to win. He hates losing 10 times more than he likes to win. People who like to win, like that buzz, then they feel satisfied. People who hate to lose, will go back and work harder as soon as the win is complete. Because the win is forgotten, the losses remain. "the tree remembers, the ax forgets"
And if he does lose, he wants to lose because it was his fault. I think that is why he gravitated towards pitching as a career. It is really the only individual sport within another sport. Pitchers can't score runs, they can only stop them.  With sheer odds I have beaten my brother a few times, at a few things, usually it ruins the day. Because I am a bit of a terrible winner, against him, and he takes a loss to me like a knife in the chest.

But having a little brother like this makes you better. It made me better. It could be said that Kirk is one of the driving forces behind why Saarloos and sons exists today.  I wouldn't be half the man I am today without a little brother like Kirk. The Saarloos work ethic, the driven competition, the ax and the tree, the win together lose alone mentality, the be ready for when you get the call to the big leagues preparation... All of it, comes from growing up with a little brother that was better than me. We still have a very healthy competition between each other.
I still sign every bottle anyone asks for, because I want more bottles than baseballs signed by a Saarloos. But he has stolen my signature, so now you can't tell.
Every single time I have the honor of signing a bottle.
I think of him.

The youthful jealousy in me has been long replaced by pride in my brother. He is a great husband, a wonderful father, a great son, and when baseball season rolls around gets dad our of my hair for a bit.  He will be known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate baseball.

Mark my words, He will be the John Wooden of baseball.

He will be, because he wants to be.

Happy Birthday Kiko

p.s. for your birthday I signed a bottle for you - come and take it from me.
