JUNE 12th is the final day between Memorial Day, The D-day Invasion, culminating in the death of my Grandfathers Brother, and my Great Uncle, John Saarloos in a port town named Cherourg.
It is a Heavy 2 Weeks for me. I think about John, our family, his feelings, why I am here, what people have given up so I can work here, growing grapes, raising my kids, making wine, and sharing it with you.
I think of the world that I was given,
I think about the world I want to give my Children.
The responciblitly I feel I have,
that, We have.
We have a parchment that is signed by FDR that was sent to his mother in the tasting room. I walk by and read it every day. It is a constant reminder of this responsibility.
It is a powerful document, The great seal adorns the heavy paper, it is embossed and vivid. The typography is in ALL CAPS, with the first word IN having the I in even larger typeset, signifying the intent of the choice of ALL CAPS. The font was chosen to reflect a permanence, as if it was etched into stone. The first time you realize that this is a Form letter, sent to over 416,800 servicemen, is when you see the font change when John's Name and Serial Number. In a strange way I have thought about the person that had to type these, and even where I could find one of these typewriters with these beautiful characters.
Gracefully signed by the President of the United States.
It is simply, Amazing.
The most powerful line I read every day is:
FREEDOM LIVES, AND THROUGH IT. HE LIVES -
IN A WAY THAT HUMBLES THE UNDERTAKINGS OF MOST MEN.
This line gets me out of bed every morning......
In light of resent events I cant help to think of the changes that have taken place in our country in the last 69 years. A friend of mine is in Berlin today, touring the Berlin wall memorial, then is heading to Stasi museum. As a Reminder of what happens when you allow Government power to go unchecked.
HONOR + PREPARE.
